PETALING JAYA: Christians nationwide are praying for Malaysia daily under the 40-day “Lighting Up Our Nation” fasting and prayer campaign organised by the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship (NECF).

The campaign, in its fourth consecutive year, is aimed at making Malaysia a righteous nation with a sense of security and good citizenship.

NECF secretary-general Rev Wong Kim Kong said the campaign was based on the belief that prayers would change the political, social, economic and religious landscape of a nation.

“Unless God intervenes in the establishment of a nation, any human effort will be futile in sustaining peace and harmony,” he said on Friday.

This year, the campaign involves 90,000 Christians.

Of these, 773 have signed up to be part of a round-the-clock prayer chain for the 40 days.

It would also raise funds for charity as Christians will set aside the money saved through their fasting.

“We hope to collect between RM600,000 and RM800,000, with 25% to be channelled to relief and development funds overseas, especially in the Middle East region, and the rest will be for local needs,” Rev Wong said.

The campaign, which started on Thursday, will end with National Day prayer rallies in major towns nationwide on the nights of Aug 30 and Aug 31.
