Orang Asli Sunday School Teachers Ask For More Training

Thirty-seven Orang Asli Christians from seven denominations gathered at the SUFES Campsite in Tapah from May 28 to 30 for the first Sunday School Teachers’ Training Camp organised by the NECF Malaysia Orang Asli Ministries Commission.

Most of the participants (86 percent) are currently teaching or have taught Sunday School. Of this, 40 percent have taught for less than a year while only 0.06 percent have more than five years’ teaching experience. About 60 percent of the participants, including one teacher who has taught Sunday School for more than five years, have never received any formal training in teaching Sunday School.

Many of them expressed gratitude for the camp but commented that the training was still insufficient. More than half the respondents indicated that they faced the following problems in their Sunday School programmes: no curriculum or systematic teaching and lack of teaching materials and aids.

They agreed that there should be workshops to teach them how to prepare teaching aids and improve their teaching and presentation skills. One participant went even further and wrote that she would like to be trained to train teachers!
