NECF Statement on School History Textbook

History is the study of events and human dealings in the past that have shaped the world and our nation's destiny. Its value lay in being an instrument of information and education in its capacity to nurture and shape the young minds of our future generations so that they may be useful citizens of the nation To further this end, it is imperative that a fair account of the events in the past and its significances be kept as accurate as possible within a balanced perspective.

The recent stream of opinions highlighted in both the mainstream and alternative media with regards to the veracity of the secondary history textbook is cause for grave concern. Concrete steps and actions must be undertaken to address the many concerns raised. It is indeed disturbing to note that the many concerns raised, has yet to be looked into by the Ministry of Education ("MOE") in what appears to be a lack of political will in addressing this pertinent matter.

NECF Malaysia is therefore of the view that the MOE ought to take cognizance of the many issues of concerned raised and begin undertaking a fair review of all history textbooks and its overall syllabus to ensure the accuracy of facts, its true meaning and significance as well as emphasis is not thoroughly viewed through the lens of one particular ethnic group. In this respect, NECF Malaysia agrees with the opinion that the History subject must not be hijacked for political or religious propaganda and must remain true to its intended purpose as a broad based educational tool.

Our Prime Minister has launched the 1Malaysia concept stressing that all Malaysian have their place in this nation that is of a multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious orientation. Irrespective of race and creed, all citizens have equal opportunities in nation building that will bring peace, stability and economic prosperity. In line with this focus, we therefore urged the government to give our future generations a proper and correct view as regards our national history and contribution. In particular, the history syllabus should consist the following:-

  1. The contribution to the development of our nation and its independence involves all ethnic groups.
  2. The religious sensitivities and interests of other faiths in a plural society like our nation must be accepted and respected.
  3. A broad worldview that may equip our future generations to face the challenges living in a globalized world.

May God bless Malaysia!
