NECF Charity Fund Cheque Presentation Ceremony
FUNDS FROM FAST How the Charity Fund came about NECF Malaysia launched the 40-Day Fast and Prayer in 2001 in response to the challenges facing the nation. The objective was to influence the spiritual, social, economic and political landscapes of the nation through prayer and fasting for the nation for 40 days culminating on the eve of Merdeka Day (Aug 30). Over 40,000 Christians participated in the first nationwide Fast and Prayer, which has since become a major annual event for Malaysian evangelical Christians. The number steadily grew through the years and at last year’s event, 90,000 Christians participated. NECF is targeting 100,000 in this year’s event.
The charity aspect of this project started in 2002 in conjunction with the 40-Day Fast and Prayer. It was inspired by Isaiah 58:6-7 (in the Bible) that calls upon the people of God to loose the chains of injustice, break every yoke, set the oppressed free, share food with the hungry, provide shelter for the homeless, clothe the naked, to help our flesh and blood.
Participants set aside the money saved from skipping their meals and at the end of the fast, the money was handed over to NECF Malaysia, which then distributed the money to needy organisations.
Thus far, an average of 265 churches nationwide have been sending their collections every year, and many of these are from smaller towns. More than RM1.6 million has been collected to date.
NECF’s policy is to extend help to everyone, regardless of race or religion, here and abroad. For example, RM100,000 from the 2003 Charity Fund was given to the Darfur’s Children Fund through Mercy Malaysia, USD5,000 was given to help poor children in Haiti, and RM360,000 was given to 51 charitable organisations in Malaysia.
2004 Charity Fund The 2004 Charity Fund yielded over RM500,000 and this time round, the money will go towards improving the lives of thousands of schoolchildren throughout Malaysia. NECF recognises the supreme importance of education for nurturing the younger generation and preparing them for gainful employment and good citizenship. Today, the principals and representatives of 33 schools will each receive on behalf of their schools between RM10,000 and RM20,000. These schools include the independent, mission and quasi-government schools, and the money will help to improve their school facilities, which include building and equipment.
