Sarawak State Election (16th April)

Sarawak will be conducting their 10th State Election. Their vote will determine the next state government to administrate Sarawak for the next five years. This election sees the ruling party facing stiff opposition from competing parties due to the many issues confronting the state. The outcome of this election is expected to bear some impact to the nation's 13th General Elections. The nomination of candidates has concluded. The campaigning has begun. The election date is set on April 16th.

 

Good Friday & Resurrection Sunday

On April 22nd-24th believers nationwide will be commemorating the anniversary of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the most important date in the Christian calendar. There are some that observe a 40 day prayer and fasting called Lent leading to the Passion Week. Most churches commemorate this weekend with special meetings together with their family, friends and community.

 

Conflicts in North Africa & Middle East

Continued unrest and conflicts in this region have resulted in much bloodshed, chaos and it is in a state of uncertainty. Egypt is currently going through her transition after the fall of Mubarak. The latest referendum points to an early elections which has caused some concerns for the secularists and Christians. Libya is in a state of civil war with Gadhafi's forces battling against the rebels who are being supported and aided by NATO and the United Nations. Many of her population have left to neighbouring countries as refugees with no end in sight to the conflict. Yemen and Syria is facing on-going street protest with the authorities responding with brute force and violence. Renewed tensions between Palestine and Israel as they trade rockets and bombs on each other.

 

Disaster Hit Nations

Within three months into 2011, we have experienced five major earthquakes in New Zealand, China, Japan, Myanmar and Indonesia. Of the five, two resulted in severe damage and loss of life. Almost 2/3 of Christchurch homes were damaged. Besides structural damage, her economy has also been severely affected. Japan suffered the worst when a devastating tsunami hit her after the earthquake. Over 10,000 died due to the tsunami and tens of thousands more are left homeless. Their greatest concern now is their damaged nuclear plant in Fukushima which is leaking radiation into air.

Our nation is standing on a precipice. We are now facing unrelenting issues of bribery and corruption. With the future of our nation at stake, we must now come to a unified stand against corruption. The UEC seeks to mobilize Christians to make a commitment to say 'NO' to corruption.
