Our Public Protectors

The increasing crime rate over the past few months has displeased the public who are now questioning the effectiveness, diligence and integrity of the police force.

Policemen are public protectors and law enforcers, charged with the responsibility of maintaining law and order in the society. To be fair to the police, they have lately been active and quick to tackle criminal activities. Meanwhile, they are revamping the force and making efforts to regain its reputation. As a result, there has been a visible 23 per cent drop in snatch theft (NST, Sept 30, 04).

Not surprisingly, the police’s enthusiasm in rounding up the bad hats of society has provoked death threats. Recently, a senior police officer received a bullet and a letter threatening death following the recent all-out war against loan sharks (Star Online, Sept 26, 04). Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar responded to the threat by vowing to keep up their efforts and not compromise (Star Online, Sept 29, 04).

The public has been urged to re-establish its confidence in the police and to offer their full co-operation in maintaining social stability and peace.

Prayer is definitely one of the key ways to demonstrate our co-operation with the police force, for "the effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much" (James 5:16b).

Suggested prayer points:

1.      Praise God for the vigilance and efficiency of the police force in combating crime.

2.  Protection and courage for the police and their families.

3.  Integrity and maturity of the police force. May there be wisdom, willingness to learn and passion to serve as public protectors.

4.  Continue to uphold IGP Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar and his family in prayer.

5.  Pray for increased co-operation and boldness from the public to assist, support and encourage the police in combating crime.

6. That the recruitment effort, among the non-Malays in particular, will be successful
