Malay Language Workshop

A WORKSHOP for the standardisation of Christian and religious terms in Malay was held at Sabah Theological Seminary over the weekend of  July 8-11th in Kota Kinabalu. Some 30 participants from all over Malaysia, including church representatives and individuals active in translation work attended the workshop.

The opening sessions focussing on principles of translation and guidelines for standardisation were conducted by Dr Daud Soesilo, a consultant with United Bible Societies. Subsequently the participants were subdivided into three working groups to discuss and propose appropriate Malay terms as translation equivalents for some 150 English language terms ¾  each group considered about 50 items. Subsequently the group proposals were reviewed at a plenary session. The net result of the workshop was threefold:

  • Preliminary suggestions  have been tabled for some 150 language terms

  • The workshop proposed the setting-up of a network for Christians involved in translation work and in writing Christian materials in Malay.

  • A decision was made to hold regular annual workshops with the long term aim of publication of a comprehensive English-Malay dictionary of Christian/ religious terms.

Those interested in becoming part of the above network or in taking part in future workshops should contact Judy Berinai at Sabah Theological Seminary. (E-mail: semtsab@po.jaring.my
